Clearyâs Golden Boot snatches extra-time win for Panthers over gutsy Knights
The Newcastle Knights and the Penrith Panthers faced off in a thrilling NRL Round 7 match, which saw the Panthers come out on top in extra time thanks to a game-winning field goal from their star halfback, Nathan Cleary.
Gamble set to replace Brailey
The Knights were dealt a blow before the match even started, with their starting hooker, Jayden Brailey, ruled out with a shoulder injury. However, the Knights were able to call on experienced hooker, Blake Gamble, to step in and fill the void. Gamble put in a solid performance, making 39 tackles and scoring a try in the second half.

Panthers dominate early
The Panthers started the match strongly, dominating possession and territory in the opening stages. They were rewarded with two early tries, with Brent Naden and Stephen Crichton crossing the line. However, the Knights fought back and were able to score two tries of their own through Kurt Mann and Dominic Young.
Knights show fighting spirit
Despite being down 14-10 at halftime, the Knights continued to show fighting spirit in the second half. They took the lead for the first time in the match after a try from Hymel Hunt, but the Panthers hit back soon after with a try from Viliame Kikau.
Extra time drama
With the scores tied at 20-20 at the end of regular time, the match went into extra time. The Knights had a chance to win the game with a field goal attempt from Phoenix Crossland, but it was wide of the mark. The Panthers then had their chance, and Nathan Cleary stepped up to kick the game-winning field goal, giving his team a hard-fought 21-20 victory.
Whatâs next for the Knights?
Despite the loss, the Knights can take plenty of positives from their performance against one of the best teams in the NRL. With Blake Gamble stepping up in the absence of Jayden Brailey, the Knights will be confident in their depth moving forward. They will look to bounce back next week when they take on the Brisbane Broncos.
