Djokovic Survives Scare from Qualifier Ivan Gakhov to Win on Return at Monte Carlo Masters
Novak Djokovic, the world number one tennis player, has made a successful return to the Monte Carlo Masters tournament after defeating Ivan Gakhov in his opening match of the event. Djokovic, who has not played a competitive match on clay since last year's French Open, struggled to find his rhythm in the first set but eventually managed to overcome his opponent in straight sets.
Masters, showed signs of rustiness in the opening set against the 267th-ranked qualifier Gakhov. Djokovic made several unforced errors and struggled to find his range as Gakhov took the first set 6-4. Speaking after the match, Djokovic admitted that he had been a little nervous before the match, but was happy to have come through the test.
"I was a little bit nervous before the match, because I haven't played on clay for a while," Djokovic said. "But I managed to find my game in the second set and then played well in the third. It's always tough playing against a qualifier, because they have nothing to lose, but I'm happy to have come through."
Djokovic also revealed that he had been working hard on his clay-court game in the lead-up to the tournament, and that he was confident of performing well on the surface this season.
"The most important thing for me on clay is to be patient and to stay focused," Djokovic said. "I've been working hard on my movement and my shot selection, and I feel like my game is improving all the time. I'm looking forward to the rest of the tournament and to the clay-court season."
So, Djokovic's win over Gakhov in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters tournament is a positive sign for the world number one as he begins his clay-court season. Despite a slow start, Djokovic was able to find his form and secure a comfortable victory in the end. With his confidence high and his game improving all the time, Djokovic will be a formidable opponent for any player on the clay this season.
