Elizabeth Holmes Denied Release and Must Begin Prison Sentence
Elizabeth Holmes, the founder and former CEO of Theranos, was denied release and must begin serving her prison sentence for fraud at the end of the month. Holmes was convicted on four counts of fraud and conspiracy in March 2022 for misleading investors and patients about the effectiveness of Theranos’ blood-testing technology.

Theranos was founded in 2003 with the goal of revolutionizing blood testing by using only a few drops of blood. Holmes claimed that her company’s technology could perform a wide range of medical tests accurately and quickly, but the technology was never proven to be effective.

Legal Proceedings and Conviction
Holmes was indicted in 2018 on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She and her former partner, Sunny Balwani, were accused of misleading investors and patients about the effectiveness of Theranos’ technology.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Holmes knew that the technology was flawed but continued to deceive investors and patients. They presented evidence showing that the company’s technology was only capable of performing a small fraction of the tests that it claimed to be able to do.
In March 2022, Holmes was convicted on four counts of fraud and conspiracy. Balwani is set to go on trial later this year.
